Description
This religious devotional object, known as an escapulario, features a central chromolithograph depicting Saint Catherine, identified by the printed text Santa Catalina. The saint is shown with her traditional attributes, including a palm frond and a sword. The image is set within a rounded rectangular frame wrapped in dark brown fabric. The frame is embellished with intricate metallic wire-work, referred to as canutillo, which forms coiled and twisted scrolling patterns. A decorative tassel-like appendage made of the same metal wire and translucent pinkish-purple beads is attached to one side. A delicate wire hanging chain is attached to the top. The reverse of the piece is finished with a dark, textured material, possibly leather or heavy paper. No maker marks or hallmarks are visible.
Dimensions: 7.5 X 4 X 1 inch.
Condition report:
The item exhibits wear consistent with age. There is visible tarnishing and oxidation across the metallic wire-work. The fabric wrapping on the frame shows fraying and surface wear, especially along the edges. The backing material on the reverse is worn with visible scuffing and discoloration. The central chromolithograph shows minor toning but remains intact.
