Description
A Japanese mixed metal cigarette case dating to the late Meiji period (1868-1912). The case is constructed from a dark metal alloy, likely shakudo, featuring intricate mixed-metal inlays in gold, silver, and copper. The decorative techniques include iro-e (colored metal inlay), takazogan (high-relief inlay), and fine engraving. The exterior front panel depicts a five-story pagoda set within a landscape of pine trees. The reverse exterior panel illustrates a mountainous landscape with a thatched-roof structure and a willow tree. The interior is fully decorated with a continuous engraved scene featuring mountains, water, and traditional buildings. It includes a spring-loaded retaining bar with an engraved geometric pattern. The bottom right corner of the reverse exterior panel bears the incised signature 秀山刻 (Shuzan koku), which translates to Carved by Shuzan.
4.75 inches x 3.25 inches.
