New Beginnings
Lot 86:
Description
This is an ornate jewelry casket featuring a truncated pyramid form with a gently domed lid. The exterior is constructed of silver toned metal sheets, likely silver plate or a white metal alloy, applied over a wooden carcass. The exterior surfaces are decorated with high relief repousse work depicting dense scrolling acanthus leaves, C scrolls, and large floral blossoms resembling sunflowers against a finely stippled background. The top lid includes a central cartouche with a lattice patterned ground. The box is fitted with a decorative articulated swing clasp and two barrel hinges. The interior is lined with navy blue velvet fabric. The construction is evidenced by the visible wood at the hinge line and the milled edges of the metal where it folds over the internal frame. No maker marks or hallmarks are visible on the exterior or interior metal components.
Dimensions: 8 X 6 X 4.5 inch.
Condition report:
The exterior metal shows a significant darkened patina and tarnish throughout. The interior velvet lining displays light wear and accumulated dust but remains intact. The wooden frame is visible at the hinges, which appear to be functional. The swing clasp is present and operational.
