Description

This traditional Chinese red lacquered wood chair is of the type identified as a foot binding chair or vanity chair, characterized by its integrated box-base storage compartment. The chair features a tall, slender open back with a shaped top rail and a single vertical central splat. The splat is decorated on the front with a shaped dark-ground cartouche featuring a hand-painted floral motif. The seat consists of a recessed wooden panel set within a wide, mitered frame. Below the seat is a solid, rectangular box-like base supported by four short, stout legs with simple feet. The entire piece is finished in a traditional vermilion red lacquer. On the reverse of the back splat, there is an unidentified mark in green paint consisting of several organic strokes that cannot be definitively transcribed. The construction utilizes traditional Chinese joinery techniques.

Dimensions: 38 X 17 X 14 inch.

Condition report:

The chair is in fair to good antique condition, showing age-appropriate wear throughout. There is significant thinning and loss of the red lacquer finish, particularly on the seat, the edges of the frame, and the feet, revealing the underlying wood. The wooden surfaces exhibit various scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations consistent with age and use. The decorative floral motif on the splat shows some fading and minor losses. The piece appears to be structurally sound.
