Description

This Chinese polychrome enameled porcelain covered jar is presented on a tiered dark wood stand. The exterior is decorated with dense floral scrollwork and stylized lotus blossoms in a Famille Rose palette of pink, yellow, blue, and green enamels, set against a bright turquoise ground. The domed lid features a similarly decorated surface and is topped with a molded finial in the form of a seated Buddhist lion, or shishi. Two small molded animal-mask lugs on the shoulders of the jar support a twisted metal wire handle. The interior of both the jar and lid is finished with a clear white glaze. The base of the jar features a square six-character seal mark in iron-red enamel, reading Da Qing Qian Long Nian Zhi. This is an apocryphal mark, and the piece is attributed to the late Qing Dynasty to Republic Period based on the style of the enameling and the execution of the mark. The interior of the lid contains a rectangular paper inventory label with a blue border, featuring the numerals 5866 and Chinese characters, alongside a partial red wax seal.

Dimensions: 7 X 6 X 6 inch.

Condition report:

The jar is in good overall condition. There is visible oxidation and wear to the twisted metal wire handle. Light surface wear is present on the enamels. The unglazed foot rim shows typical darkening from age and handling. The wooden stand has a lustrous finish with minor surface abrasions and small nicks consistent with age.
