The piece features a rectangular form with scalloped, lobed edges and a small suspension loop attached to the side. The exterior is decorated on both sides and the lid with intricate bright-cut engraved geometric patterns consisting of interlocking star motifs. One face includes a central shield-shaped cartouche engraved with a cursive monogram, appearing to be the initials JS. The interior of the case features a partial gold wash or vermeil finish. The inner rim of the body and lid are struck with a full set of British hallmarks. These marks include the maker’s mark S.M.L for S. M. Levi Ltd, the lion passant indicating .925 sterling silver purity, the anchor mark for the Birmingham assay office, and the lowercase date letter y for the year 1898.
