Description
Mary McGrew, Westmoreland County, 1834, silk on linen. Alphabet and number lines over a verse over trees and birds. In a blue-painted frame by Bernie Harter. 24" high, 20" wide (overall). According to Mrs. Brown’s notes, Mary McGrew was an ancestor of her husband, Roger Dean Brown (1927-2015). Geneaological research has located Mary Isabella McGrew (1803-1842), born in Westmoreland County to James Blackburn McGrew (1781-1836) and Isabella McRae McGrew (1782-1840). Mary came west to Noble County in 1838 and married John Mansperger Jr. (1817-1887). She had two children with John, but died before her fortieth birthday. Probably line of descent of this sampler: Mary McGrew to Isabella Mansperger (daughter) to Charles Nelson brown (son) to Walter Harold Brown (son) to Roger Dean Brown (son).
